CERTAINITY
INTIMATING DEVELOPMENT IN VISAKHAPATNAM
CITY DEVELOPMENT STRATEGY(CDS):
VISAKHAPATNAM,
MARCH 5. Visakhapatnam has been chosen as the third city
in thecountry to implement the city development strategy
(CDS) and slum upgradation action plan of the `City Alliance',
a global consultancy organisation on urban development.
The other two are Hyderabad and Calicut.
Building
on past initiatives, the Municipal Corporation of Visakhapatnam
(Vizag) is proposing to prepare, through a sustainable,
consultative process, a City Development Strategy and
Slum Upgrading Action Plan with a focus on comprehensive
and citywide slum upgrading and building an agenda for
enhanced economic development in the city.
OBJECTIVES
OF CDS:
*
Support Vizag City to improve municipal management and
governance;
*
Provide increased employment opportunities for under-privileged
citizens;
* Develop an agreed, costed and timetabled Agenda for
Action for Vizag to become a “city without slums”,
in consonance with the Millennium Development Goals.
EXPANSION PLANS OF CORPORATES
VISAKHAPATNAM
STEEL PLANT (VSP)
The
Prime Minister also launched an ambitious expansion plan
of the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant with an outlay of Rs.8,600
crores. Describing Visakhapatnam as one of the potential
locations for setting up special economic regions, the
Prime Minister promised all support to the State government
in its efforts to attract $10 billion as investment.
HINDUSTAN PETROLEUM CORPORATION LIMITED (HPCL
VISAKHAPATNAM:
As part of its grandiose plan to increase its refining
capacity, the oil major Hindustan Petroleum Corporation
Limited (HPCL) has decided in principle to set up a greenfield
refinery and petrochemical complex with an investment
of Rs.18,000 crores.

AIRPORT
Visakhapatnam
Airport's new terminal is expected to be completed at
a cost of Rs.90 crores by the end of next year. The Centre
has promised to consider any proposal to create a Mass
Rapid Transport System.

The
Officer on Special Duty of AP Industrial Infrastructure
Development Corporation, K. Ratnaprabha, painted a rosy
picture of Vizag's development by listing projects in
the pipeline like

Bhabha Atomic Research Centre,

Pharma City,

Ceramic Park
*
and the Srikakulam-Kakinada industrial corridor
Centre
has sought 7,000 acres for another greenfield petrochemical
project after deputing a team to the SEZ area.
The
Bhabha Atomic Research Station has been allotted 2,006
acres for developing a research station.
A
Sri Lankan multi-national corporation has been given 1,000
acres for setting up an apparel park.
Satyam
has invested Rs.55 crore on the city center, near Bullayya
College, with plans to employ 2,000 people. It will develop
a special economic zone (SEZ) on 50 acres allotted to
it near Bheemunipatnam with an employment potential for
8,000 to 10,000 people.
With
the State government according priority to the development
of the city as a second-tier Information Technology (IT)
hub and industry leaders responding positively, Vizag
is attracting software units and professionals.
Vizag
should become a healthy city also by implementing total
medical care. In this connection, The Minister for Commercial
Taxes, Konathala Ramakrishna said that the Chief Minister,
Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, "is keen on establishing
the VIMS (Visakhapatnam institute of medical sciences).''
Vizag
ranked No.11 in respect of business process outsourcing
and was optimistic that it could become No.1, provided
the CDS action plan was implemented.
The
Minister for Commercial Taxes, Konathala Ramakrishna also
hinted at Vizag getting a metro light rail system for
easing the traffic congestion.
VUDA
– MASTER PLAN (2021)
The
Zonal development plans for various areas have been prepared
within the overall framework of Master Plan containing
the site plan and land use plan for the development of
the roads, housing, schools, recreation, hospitals, industries,
business, markets, public works and utilities, public
buildings, open spaces etc. The projected population of
34.49 Lakhs by 2021 is distributed spatially on the basis
of the proposed economic activities in the region. For
the purpose of an integrated development of the region,
growth centers, growth points and service villages are
identified.
The
ever-growing need for housing is a critical issue. The
total housing requirement in VMR for the additional population
for horizon year 2021 is 2.94 lakhs. Eight new towns proposed
would accommodate approximately 1.25 lakh new housing
units.
It
is suggested continued focus on heritage areas (Vizag
Old Town, Dutch Heritage buildings in Bheemunipatnam,
Buddhist archaeological sites and surrounding areas).
